Criminology

Fear of crime, calling the police and catching offenders

Students will be introduced to key concepts in crime reporting, victimisation and criminal justice processes. We will examine patterns in fear of crime across age and gender groups, rates of crime reporting to police and the factors that influence decisions not to report offences. Using diagrams and real-world inspired crime data visualisations, students will analyse who experiences fear of crime, and how different offence categories are represented in police reporting and calls for service. They will also explore the reasons individuals may avoid contacting police.

Law

Oral advocacy

Students will be introduced to mooting and oral advocacy skills. They will learn how to analyse a hypothetical legal problem, prepare written submissions and deliver clear and persuasive oral arguments under time constraints, while responding confidently to questions. Students will unpack a real-world inspired problem with scaffolded support to identify and use facts to construct legal arguments, developing both claimant and respondent positions, with an opportunity to present those arguments to the group.

Pathways presentation

Our Future Students team delivers a clear, engaging presentation for Year 11 students exploring pathways into law and criminology careers. We outline key study options and what to expect academically and socially. Students will also gain practical information on entry pathways, including scholarships and support services, to confidently plan their next steps.
