ABOUT
This workshop provides a practical overview of mixed-methods research, where both quantitative (numerical) and qualitative (descriptive) data are integrated within a single study. Mixed-methods research (MMR) offers a more comprehensive understanding of complex phenomena than individual methods: quantitative data enable generalisation and identification of relationships between variables, while qualitative data provide detailed, contextualised insights into human experiences.
Mixing methods enables a deeper analysis by drawing on multiple perspectives. It supports triangulation, where findings from different methods are compared to enhance their robustness. It helps researchers address more diverse audiences.
The workshop begins by breaking down key functions of MMR, showing how different research methods can be combined to produce more meaningful results. It then offers practical insights into research design, including how to sequence and prioritise methods effectively. Finally, the workshop outlines commonly-used mixed-methods designs, demonstrating how these have been used successfully in theses and published studies.
